Heirs on the other side of the world

Some of the families we help don’t live in Florida — or even in the United States. Two of our most meaningful files involved heirs in Romania and Russia who had no idea a home was waiting for them.

Romania: a father finds out, decades later

Years ago, a mother brought her young son to America and built a new life. Their family back in Romania lost touch completely. When the mother and son had both passed away, their homes in Florida sat with no one to settle them.

We hired a private investigator, who located the boy’s father in Romania. Alex was the one who had to tell him that his former wife and his son were gone — and that he was the next of kin.

“It was horrible news, but looking back, it was the start of receiving closure… Alex visited my son’s grave for me, took pictures, and gave me the coordinates.”— Miadora, heir in Romania · full review

On our Romanian files, the sworn affidavit of heirs was translated into Romanian, signed and notarized there, then translated back into English and certified for the Florida court. Closing was signed by remote online notarization, and the proceeds were sent by international wire through the title company. The heir never had to travel.

Russia: two probates, one heir

Two family members passed away within months of each other, leaving two homes and a complicated estate. The last living heir, their father, lived in Russia.

That meant two estates’ worth of paperwork, two houses, a language barrier and an ocean. We handled the transaction from start to finish:

  • Our independent probate attorney structured the filings as summary administrations with priority requests
  • Every document was prepared in English, then translated for the heir by our translator before he signed
  • The heir signed by remote online notarization from Russia — no travel
  • We paid every probate cost, and the title company handled the international closing and the federal tax withholding rules that apply to foreign sellers

What this means for you

If you live outside Florida — or outside the U.S. — you can still settle a Florida estate without getting on a plane. We’ve done it for heirs in other states, in Romania, and in Russia. You’ll deal with one person the whole way through.
